The Integrated Bioprocessing Research Laboratory (IBRL) is leading the way in food and bioprocessing research, teaching, and scale-up activities. Our facilities include over 50,000 sq. ft. of recently constructed and modernized pilot plant, laboratory, and collaborative space filled with over $15M in pilot-scale processing equipment. Our clients range from start-up businesses to Fortune 500 companies in addition to our work supporting major federal research grants, traditional classes, and continuing education opportunities for industry. We are continually adding new capabilities to our program and are excited to build upon our excellent staff through a strategic hire in coordination with ADM’s Process Development group. The qualified candidate will be expected to develop techniques to measure steeped corn quality for application in use of predicted performance of corn wet milling processing. Developed methods and techniques are expected to be applicable and usable in an industrial plant environment.
This position is initially a one-year appointment. This position may become non-visiting based on programmatic needs, funding and performance.

Primary Position Function:
The Visiting Research Scientist is working to develop a quantitative test at the laboratory scale for determining how well corn is steeped and how that relates to its wet milling performance. This position will perform corn kernel steep research with the aim of a method that can be implemented by industry corn wet milling plants.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Create new experimental approaches and prepare design of experiment (DOE) studies with clear objectives and individually carry out experiments to accomplish project goals.
Practice safe handling of hazardous material and adherence to hazard communication and safety protocols as identified by both IBRL staff and ADM.
Write scientific reports and communicate effectively through verbal updates, written reports and presentations.
Maintain the cleanliness of the laboratory and working environment to adhere to safety and general lab protocols.
Conduct literature review related to a specific project.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education:
Required: Master’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Food Process Engineering, or closely related field
Preferred: PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Food Process Engineering.
Experience:
Required:
1-3 years laboratory experience in an area such as grain science, bioprocessing, or similar.
Experiences working independently.
Preferred:
Industrial plant experience or willingness to work in industrial scale plant preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required:
Fundamental background knowledge of separation and purification processes, material and energy balance.
Effective writing and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability for work in process optimization and impact of process parameters and measures.
Prefered:
Ability to design, set up, operate and maintain lab and pilot equipment preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work with other team members in a fast-paced environment.
The Visiting Research Scientist position is a full-time, benefits-eligible visiting academic professional position. The start date for the position is negotiable. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
